Mr.Ewellremindedmeofadeaf-mute.IwassurehehadneverheardthewordsJudgeTaylordirectedathim—hismouthstruggledsilentlywiththem—buttheirimportregisteredonhisface.Smugnessfadedfromit,replacedbyadoggedearnestnessthatfooledJudgeTaylornotatall:aslongasMr.Ewellwasonthestand,thejudgekepthiseyesonhim,asifdaringhimtomakeafalsemove.
Mr.GilmerandAtticusexchangedglances.Atticuswassittingdownagain,hisfistrestedonhischeekandwecouldnotseehisface.Mr.Gilmerlookedratherdesperate.AquestionfromJudgeTaylormadehimrelax:"Mr.Ewell,didyouseethedefendantualintercoursewithyourdaughter?"

Thespectatorswerequiet,butthedefendantsaidsomething.Atticuswhisperedtohim,andTomRobinsonwassilent.
