           Mr.Ewellremindedmeofadeaf-mute.IwassurehehadneverheardthewordsJudgeTaylordirectedathimhismouthstruggledsilentlywiththembuttheirimportregisteredonhisface.Smugnessfadedfromit,replacedbyadoggedearnestnessthatfooledJudgeTaylornotatall:aslongasMr.Ewellwasonthestand,thejudgekepthiseyesonhim,asifdaringhimtomakeafalsemove.
