           WhenBooRadleyshuffledtohisfeet,lightfromthelivingroomwindowsglistenedonhisforehead.Everymovehemadewasuncertain,asifhewerenotsurehishandsandfeetcouldmakepropercontactwiththethingshetouched.Hecoughedhisdreadfulralingcough,andwassoshakenhehadtositdownagain.Hishandsearchedforhishippocket,andhepulledoutahandkerchief.Hecoughedintoit,thenhewipedhisforehead.

           Havingbeensoaccustomedtohisabsence,Ifounditincrediblethathehadbeensittingbesidemeallthistime,present.Hehadnotmadeasound.

           Oncemore,hegottohisfeet.Heturnedtomeandnoddedtowardthefrontdoor.

           "You’dliketosaygoodnighttoJem,wouldn’tyou,Mr.Arthur?Comerightin."

           Iledhimdownthehall.AuntAlexandrawassittingbyJem’sbed."Comein,Arthur,"shesaid."He’sstillasleep.Dr.Reynoldsgavehimaheavysedative.JeanLouise,isyourfatherinthelivingroom?"
