           "Mary,IhavebeenmarriedtoMr.Rochesterthismorning." Thehousekeeperandherhusbandwerebothofthatdecentphlegmaticorderofpeople,towhomonemayatanytimesafelycommunicatearemarkablepieceofnewswithoutincurringthedangerofhavingone’searspiercedbysomeshrillejaculation,andsubsequentlystunnedbyatorrentofwordywonderment. Marydidlookup,andshedidstareatme:theladlewithwhichshewasbastingapairofchickensroastingatthefire,didforsomethreeminuteshangsuspendedinair;andforthesamespaceoftimeJohn’sknivesalsohadrestfromthepolishingprocess:butMary,bendingagainovertheroast,saidonly
