           ItwasnearChristmasbythetimeallwassettled:theseasonofgeneralholidayapproached. InowclosedMortonschool,takingcarethatthepartingshouldnotbebarrenonmyside. Goodfortuneopensthehandaswellastheheartwonderfully;andtogivesomewhatwhenwehavelargelyreceived,isbuttoaffordaventtotheunusualebullitionofthesensations. Ihadlongfeltwithpleasurethatmanyofmyrusticscholarslikedme,andwhenweparted,thatconsciousnesswasconfirmed:theymanifestedtheiraffectionplainlyandstrongly. DeepwasmygratificationtofindIhadreallyaplaceintheirunsophisticatedhearts:IpromisedthemthatneveraweekshouldpassinfuturethatIdidnotvisitthem,andgivethemanhour’steachingintheirschool. 

           Mr.Riverscameupas,havingseentheclasses,nownumberingsixtygirls,fileoutbeforeme,andlockedthedoor,Istoodwiththekeyinmyhand,exchangingafewwordsofspecialfarewellwithsomehalf-dozenofmybestscholars:asdecent,respectable,modest,andwell-informedyoungwomenascouldbefoundintheranksoftheBritishpeasantry. Andthatissayingagreatdeal;forafterall,theBritishpeasantryarethebesttaught,bestmannered,mostself-respectingofanyinEurope:sincethosedaysIhaveseenpaysannesandBauerinnen;andthebestofthemseemedtomeignorant,coarse,andbesotted,comparedwithmyMortongirls.
