           Aweekpassed,andnonewsarrivedofMr.Rochester:tendays,andstillhedidnotcome. Mrs.FairfaxsaidsheshouldnotbesurprisedifheweretogostraightfromtheLeastoLondon,andthencetotheContinent,andnotshowhisfaceagainatThornfieldforayeartocome;hehadnotunfrequentlyquitteditinamannerquiteasabruptandunexpected. WhenIheardthis,Iwasbeginningtofeelastrangechillandfailingattheheart. Iwasactuallypermittingmyselftoexperienceasickeningsenseofdisappointment;butrallyingmywits,andrecollectingmyprinciples,Iatoncecalledmysensationstoorder; anditwaswonderfulhowIgotoverthetemporaryblunderhowIclearedupthemistakeofsupposingMr.Rochester’smovementsamatterinwhichIhadanycausetotakeavitalinterest. NotthatIhumbledmyselfbyaslavishnotionofinferiority:onthecontrary,Ijustsaid 

           "YouhavenothingtodowiththemasterofThornfield,furtherthantoreceivethesalaryhegivesyouforteachinghisprotegee,andtobegratefulforsuchrespectfulandkindtreatmentas,ifyoudoyourduty,youhavearighttoexpectathishands. Besurethatistheonlytieheseriouslyacknowledgesbetweenyouandhim; sodon’tmakehimtheobjectofyourfinefeelings,yourraptures,agonies,andsoforth. Heisnotofyourorder:keeptoyourcaste,andbetooself-respectingtolavishtheloveofthewholeheart,soul,andstrength,wheresuchagiftisnotwantedandwouldbedespised."
