           WhenteawasoverandMrs.Fairfaxhadtakenherknitting,andIhadassumedalowseatnearher,andAdele,kneelingonthecarpet,hadnestledcloseuptome,andasenseofmutualaffectionseemedtosurrounduswitharingofgoldenpeace,Iutteredasilentprayerthatwemightnotbepartedfarorsoon; butwhen,aswethussat,Mr.Rochesterentered,unannounced,andlookingatus,seemedtotakepleasureinthespectacleofagroupsoamicablewhenhesaidhesupposedtheoldladywasallrightnowthatshehadgotheradopteddaughterbackagain,andaddedthathesawAdelewas"preteecroquersapetitemamanAnglaise" Ihalfventuredtohopethathewould,evenafterhismarriage,keepustogethersomewhereundertheshelterofhisprotection,andnotquiteexiledfromthesunshineofhispresence. 

           AfortnightofdubiouscalmsucceededmyreturntoThornfieldHall. Nothingwassaidofthemaster’smarriage,andIsawnopreparationgoingonforsuchanevent. AlmosteverydayIaskedMrs.Fairfaxifshehadyetheardanythingdecided:heranswerwasalwaysinthenegative. OnceshesaidshehadactuallyputthequestiontoMr.Rochesterastowhenhewasgoingtobringhisbridehome;buthehadansweredheronlybyajokeandoneofhisqueerlooks,andshecouldnottellwhattomakeofhim.
