           Thereshesat,staidandtaciturn-looking,asusual,inherbrownstuffgown,hercheckapron,whitehandkerchief,andcap. Shewasintentonherwork,inwhichherwholethoughtsseemedabsorbed:onherhardforehead,andinhercommonplacefeatures,wasnothingeitherofthepalenessordesperationonewouldhaveexpectedtoseemarkingthecountenanceofawomanwhohadattemptedmurder,andwhoseintendedvictimhadfollowedherlastnighttoherlair,and(asIbelieved),chargedherwiththecrimeshewishedtoperpetrate. Iwasamazedconfounded. Shelookedup,whileIstillgazedather:nostart,noincreaseorfailureofcolourbetrayedemotion,consciousnessofguilt,orfearofdetection. Shesaid"Goodmorning,Miss,"inherusualphlegmaticandbriefmanner;andtakingupanotherringandmoretape,wentonwithhersewing. 

           "Iwillputhertosometest,"thoughtI:"suchabsoluteimpenetrabilityispastcomprehension." 

           "Goodmorning,Grace,"Isaid."Hasanythinghappenedhere?IthoughtIheardtheservantsalltalkingtogetherawhileago.
