Thenmysolereliefwastowalkalongthecorridorofthethirdstorey,backwardsandforwards,safeinthesilenceandsolitudeofthespot,andallowmymind’seyetodwellonwhateverbrightvisionsrosebeforeit—and,certainly,theyweremanyandglowing;toletmyheartbeheavedbytheexultantmovement,which,whileitswelleditintrouble,expandeditwithlife;and,bestofall,toopenmyinwardeartoatalethatwasneverended—atalemyimaginationcreated,andnarratedcontinuously;quickenedwithallofincident,life,fire,feeling,thatIdesiredandhadnotinmyactualexistence.
Itisinvaintosayhumanbeingsoughttobesatisfiedwithtranquillity:theymusthaveaction;andtheywillmakeitiftheycannotfindit. Millionsarecondemnedtoastillerdoomthanmine,andmillionsareinsilentrevoltagainsttheirlot. Nobodyknowshowmanyrebellionsbesidespoliticalrebellionsfermentinthemassesoflifewhichpeopleearth. Womenaresupposedtobeverycalmgenerally:butwomenfeeljustasmenfeel;theyneedexercisefortheirfaculties,andafieldfortheirefforts,asmuchastheirbrothersdo; theysufferfromtoorigidarestraint,tooabsoluteastagnation,preciselyasmenwouldsuffer; anditisnarrow-mindedintheirmoreprivilegedfellow-creaturestosaythattheyoughttoconfinethemselvestomakingpuddingsandknittingstockings,toplayingonthepianoandembroideringbags.
