Iwalkedaboutthechambermostofthetime. Iimaginedmyselfonlytoberegrettingmyloss,andthinkinghowtorepairit; butwhenmyreflectionswereconcluded,andIlookedupandfoundthattheafternoonwasgone,andeveningfaradvanced,anotherdiscoverydawnedonme,namely,thatintheintervalIhadundergoneatransformingprocess;thatmymindhadputoffallithadborrowedofMissTemple—orratherthatshehadtakenwithherthesereneatmosphereIhadbeenbreathinginhervicinity—andthatnowIwasleftinmynaturalelement,andbeginningtofeelthestirringofoldemotions. Itdidnotseemasifapropwerewithdrawn,butratherasifamotiveweregone:itwasnotthepowertobetranquilwhichhadfailedme,butthereasonfortranquillitywasnomore. MyworldhadforsomeyearsbeeninLowood:myexperiencehadbeenofitsrulesandsystems; nowIrememberedthattherealworldwaswide,andthatavariedfieldofhopesandfears,ofsensationsandexcitements,awaitedthosewhohadcouragetogoforthintoitsexpanse,toseekrealknowledgeoflifeamidstitsperils.
Iwenttomywindow,openedit,andlookedout. Therewerethetwowingsofthebuilding;therewasthegarden;thereweretheskirtsofLowood;therewasthehillyhorizon. Myeyepassedallotherobjectstorestonthosemostremote,thebluepeaks;itwasthoseIlongedtosurmount;allwithintheirboundaryofrockandheathseemedprison-ground,exilelimits.
