           Anditwasstillgoingon,Mrs.Ramsaymused,glidinglikeaghostamongthechairsandtablesofthatdrawing-roomonthebanksoftheThameswhereshehadbeensovery,verycoldtwentyyearsago;butnowshewentamongthemlikeaghost;anditfascinatedher,asif,whileshehadchanged,thatparticularday,nowbecomeverystillandbeautiful,hadremainedthere,alltheseyears.HadCarriewrittentohimherself?sheasked.

           "Yes.Shesaysthey’rebuildinganewbilliardroom,"hesaid.No!No!Thatwasoutofthequestion!Buildinganewbilliardroom!Itseemedtoherimpossible.

           Mr.Bankescouldnotseethattherewasanythingveryoddaboutit.Theywereverywelloffnow.ShouldhegiveherlovetoCarrie?

           "Peoplesoondriftapart,"saidMr.Bankes,feeling,however,somesatisfactionwhenhethoughtthatafterallheknewboththeManningsandtheRamsays.Hehadnotdriftedaparthethought,layingdownhisspoonandwipinghisclean-shavenlipspunctiliously.
