TheyhadbeenrehearsingforafortnightwhenRogerarrivedfromAustria.HehadbeenspendingafewweeksonaCarinthianlake,andafteradayortwoinLondonwastogoandstaywithfriendsinScotland.SinceMichaelhadtodineearlytogotothetheatreJuliawenttomeethimbyherself.Whenshewasdressing,Evie,sniffingasusual,toldherthatshewastakingasmuchpainstomakeherselflookniceasifsheweregoingtomeetayoungman.ShewantedRogertobeproudofher,andcertainlyshelookedveryyoungandprettyinhersummerfrockasshestrolledupanddowntheplatform.Youwouldhavethought,butwrongly,thatshewasperfectlyunconsciousoftheattentionsheattracted.Roger,afteramonthinthesun,wasverybrown,buthewasstillratherspottyandheseemedthinnerthanwhenhehadleftLondonattheNewYear.Shehuggedhimwithexuberantaffection.Hesmiledslightly.
