RehearsalsbegananddistractedJulia’stroubledmind.TherevivalthatMichaelputonwhenshewentabroadhaddoneneitherverywellnorverybadly,butratherthanclosethetheatrehewaskeepingitinthebilltillNowadayswasready.Becausehewasactingtwomatineesaweek,andtheweatherwashot,hedeterminedthattheyshouldtakerehearsalseasy.Theyhadamonthbeforethem.
ThoughJuliahadbeenonthestagesolongshehadneverlostthethrillshegotoutofrehearsing,andthefirstrehearsalstillmadeheralmostsickwithexcitement.Itwasthebeginningofanewadventure.Shedidnotfeellikealeadingladythen,shefeltasgayandeagerasifshewereagirlplayingherfirstsmallpart.Butatthesametimeshehadadelicioussenseofherownpowers.Oncemoreshehadthechancetoexercisethem.
Ateleveno’clockshesteppedontothestage.Thecaststoodaboutidly.ShekissedandshookhandswiththeartistssheknewandMichaelwithurbanityintroducedtoherthoseshedidnot.ShegreetedAviceCrich-tonwithcordiality.Shetoldherhowprettyshewasandhowmuchshelikedherhat;shetoldheraboutthelovelyfrocksshehadchosenforherinParis.
"HaveyouseenTomlately?"sheasked.
"No,Ihaven’t.He’sawayonhisholiday."
"Oh,yes.He’sanicelittlething,isn’the?"
