TomwenttoEastbournewithhisfamilyforChristmas.JuliahadtwoperformancesonBoxingDay,sotheGosselynsstayedintown;theywenttoalargepartyattheSavoythatDollydeVriesgavetoseetheNewYearin;andafewdayslaterRogersetoffforVienna.WhilehewasinLondonJuliasawlittleofTom.ShedidnotaskRogerwhattheydidwhentheytoreaboutthetowntogether,shedidnotwanttoknow,shesteeledherselfnottothinkanddistractedhermindbygoingtoasmanypartiesasshecould.Andtherewasalwaysheracting;whenonceshegotintothetheatreheranguish,herhumiliation,herjealousywereallayed.Itgaveherasenseoftriumphantpowertofind,asitwereinherpotofgreasepaint,anotherpersonalitythatcouldbetouchedbynohumangriefs.Withthatrefugealwaysathandshecouldsupportanything.

"Areyoudoinganythingtonight?Whataboutgoingoutonthebinge?"
