AuntCarrieandJulia’smother,Mrs.Lambert,livedinthemorning-room,alongnarrowroom,withEmpirefurniture.OnthewallsinovalframeswereoilportraitsofAuntCarrieandherdeceasedhusband,ofhisfatherandmother,andapastelofthedeadsonasachild.Heretheyhadtheirwork-boxes,heretheyreadtheirpapers,theCatholicLaCroix,theRevuedesDeuxMondesandthelocaldaily,andheretheyplayeddominoesintheevening.ExceptonThursdayeveningswhentheAbbeandtheCommandantLaGarde,aretirednavalofficer,cametodinner,theyhadtheirmealsthere;butwhenJuliaarrivedtheydecidedthatitwouldbemoreconvenienttoeatinthedining-room.
