Five—Heshouldpossessthequalityofalmostinfinitepatienceaswellastoleranceandperseverance.Treatmentofsuchacaserequiresanongoingcommitmenttowhatwillsurelybelong,laborious,anddifficulttheraphy.
Somegeneralprinciplesoftherapythatarenowacceptedbythosewhohavetreatedmultiplesareasfollows:
One—Allofthepersonalitiesmustbeidentifiedandrecognized.
Two—Thetherapistmustascertainthereasonfortheexistenceofsuchpersonalities.
Three—Thetherapistmustthenbewillingtodotherapywithallofthepersonalitiesinanattempttoeffectchange.
Four—Thetherapistshouldfocusonwhateverpositivequalitiesmaybeidentifiedandattempttobringaboutsomesortofcompromiseamongthealterpersonalities,especiallythosewhichmayposeathreattotheselforothers.
Five—Thepatientmustbecomefullyawareofthenatureandextentoftheproblemsandmustbehelpedthroughtherapy,tocontributetopositiveresolution.Inotherwords,Counselor,thepatientmustbecomeawareofthetreatmentprocessandnotjustbeapassiverecipientofthetherapy.
