BillyMilliganwastransferredfromtheFranklinCountyJailtoHardingHospitaltwodaysaheadofschedule,onthemorningofMarch16.Dr.GeorgeHardinghadassembledandbriefedatherapyteamforMilligan,butwhenhearrivedunexpectedly,Dr.HardingwasawayatapsychiatricmeetinginChicago.
JudyStevensonandDorothyTurner,whohadfollowedthepolicecartoHardingHospital,knewwhataterribleblowitwouldbetoDannytobetakenbacktojail.Dr.Shoemaker,astaffphysician,agreedtotakepersonalchargeofthepatientuntilDr.Hardingreturned,andthesheriff’sdeputysignedhisprisonerover.
JudyandDorothywalkedwithDannytoWakefieldCottage,alockedpsychiatricunitwithfacilitiesforfourteendifficultpatientsrequiringconstantobservationandpersonalattention.Abedwasfoundandprepared,andDannywasassignedtooneoftwo"specialcare"roomswhoseheavyoakdoorshadpeepholesforaround-the-clockobservation.Apsychiatricaide(called"psych-tech"atHardingHospital)broughthimalunchtray,andbothwomenstayedwithhimwhileheate.
Afterlunch,Dr.Shoemakerandthreenursesjoinedthem.Turner—feelingitwasimportantforthestafftoseethemultiplepersonalitysyndromeforthemselves—suggestedtoDannythatArthurcomeoutandmeetsomeofthepeoplewhowouldbeworkingwithhim.
Nurse.AdrienneMcCann,theunitcoordinator,hadbeenbriefedaspartofthetherapyteam,buttheothertwonursesweretakencompletelybysurprise.
