OnMarch23,1972,AllenwentwithDorothytotherecruitingoffice,andheandTommysignedtheenlistmentpapers.DorothyhadmixedfeelingsaboutlettingheryoungersonjointheNavy,butsheknewitwasimportanttogetnimoutofthehouse,awayfromChalmer.Theexpulsionfromschoolhadmadethingsworse.
Therecruitingofficermovedquicklythroughthepaperworkandthequestions.Dorothydidmostoftheanswering.
"Haveyoueverbeeninamentalinstitutionorbeendiagnosedasmentallyill?"
"No,"Tommysaid."Notme."
