Whenitwastimeforthemeeting,Nemursteeredusthroughthegiganticlobbywithitsheavybaroquefurnishingsandhugecurvingmarblestaircases,andwemovedthroughthethickeningknotsofhandshakers,nodders,andsmilers.TwootherprofessorsfromBeekmanwhohadarrivedinChicagojustthismorningjoinedus.Professors"WhiteandClingerwalkedalittletotherightandasteportwobehindNemurandStrauss,whileBurtandIbroughtuptherear.
StandeespartedtomakeapathforusintotheGrandBallroom,andNemurwavedtothereportersandphotographerswhohadcometohearatfirsthandaboutthestartlingthingsthathadbeendonewitharetardateadultinjustalittleoverthreemonths.
Nemurhadobviouslysentoutadvancepublicityreleases.
Someofthepsychologicalpapersdeliveredatthemeetingwereimpressive.AgroupfromAlaskashowedhowstimulationofvariousportionsofthebraincausedasignificantdevelopmentinlearningability,andagroupfromNewZealandhadmappedoutthoseportionsofthebrainthatcontrolledperceptionandretentionofstimuli.
Buttherewereotherkindsofpaperstoo—P.T.Zeller-man’sstudyonthedifferenceinthelengthoftimeittookwhiteratstolearnamazewhenthecornerswerecurvedratherthanangular,orWorfelspaperontheeffectofintelligencelevelonthereaction-timeofrhesusmonkeys.
