           Boyssprintedpastonbicycles,automobilesjammedwithelaboratebetasselledsportsmenslidupthestreet,highhornstootedtoannouncetheapproachoftherace,andunsuspectedcooksinundershirtsappearedatrestaurantdoorsasaroundabendaprocessioncameintosight.Firstwasalonecyclistinaredjersey,toilingintentandconfidentoutofthewesteringsun,passingtothemelodyofahighchatteringcheer.Thenthreetogetherinaharlequinadeoffadedcolor,legscakedyellowwithdustandsweat,facesexpressionless,eyesheavyandendlesslytired.

           TommyfacedDick,saying:"IthinkNicolewantsadivorceIsupposeyou’llmakenoobstacles?"

           Atroupeoffiftymoreswarmedafterthefirstbicycleracers,strungoutovertwohundredyards;afewweresmilingandself-conscious,afewobviouslyexhausted,mostofthemindifferentandweary.Aretinueofsmallboyspassed,afewdefiantstragglers,alighttruckcarriedthedupesofaccidentanddefeat.Theywerebackatthetable.NicolewantedDicktotaketheinitiative,butheseemedcontenttositwithhisfacehalf-shavedmatchingherhairhalf-washed.
