OnthepleasantshoreoftheFrenchRiviera,abouthalfwaybetweenMarseillesandtheItalianborder,standsalarge,proud,rose-coloredhotel.Deferentialpalmscoolitsflushedfaçade,andbeforeitstretchesashortdazzlingbeach.Latelyithasbecomeasummerresortofnotableandfashionablepeople;adecadeagoitwasalmostdesertedafteritsEnglishclientelewentnorthinApril.Now,manybungalowsclusternearit,butwhenthisstorybeginsonlythecupolasofadozenoldvillasrottedlikewaterliliesamongthemassedpinesbetweenGausse’sHôteldesÉtrangersandCannes,fivemilesaway.
