           Thechauffeurwhobroughtthemessagewasgone;theconciergehailedanotheroneandtoldhimthelocationofthejail.Astheyrode,thedarknessliftedandthinnedoutsideandBaby’snerves,scarcelyawake,cringedfaintlyattheunstablebalancebetweennightandday.Shebegantoraceagainsttheday;sometimesonthebroadavenuesshegainedbutwheneverthethingthatwaspushinguppausedforamoment,gustsofwindblewhereandthereimpatientlyandtheslowcreepoflightbeganoncemore.Thecabwentpastaloudfountainsplashinginavoluminousshadow,turnedintoanalleysocurvedthatthebuildingswerewarpedandstrainedfollowingit,bumpedandrattledovercobblestones,andstoppedwithajerkwheretwosentryboxeswerebrightagainstawallofgreendamp.SuddenlyfromthevioletdarknessofanarchwaycameDick’svoice,shoutingandscreaming.

           "ArethereanyEnglish?ArethereanyAmericans?ArethereanyEnglish?Arethereanyoh,myGod!YoudirtyWops!"

           Hisvoicediedawayandsheheardadullsoundofbeatingonthedoor.Thenthevoicebeganagain.

           "ArethereanyAmericans?ArethereanyEnglish?"

           Followingthevoicesheranthroughthearchintoacourt,whirledaboutinmomentaryconfusionandlocatedthesmallguard-roomwhencethecriescame.Twocarabinieristartedtotheirfeet,butBabybrushedpastthemtothedoorofthecell.
