           Tomopenedthedoorandsteppedout.Thefamilyclimbeddownfromtheloadandlookedcuriouslyatthecamp.RuthieandWinfield,fromthehabitoftheroad,tookdownthebucketandwalkedtowardthewillows,wheretherewouldbewater;andthelineofchildrenpartedforthemandclosedafterthem.

           Theflapsofthefirstshackpartedandawomanlookedout.Hergrayhairwasbraided,andsheworeadirty,floweredMotherHubbard.Herfacewaswizenedanddull,deepgraypouchesunderblankeyes,andamouthslackandloose.

           Pasaid,«Canwejus’pullupanywheresan’camp?»

           Theheadwaswithdrawninsidetheshack.Foramomenttherewasquietandthentheflapswerepushedasideandabeardedmaninshirtsleevessteppedout.Thewomanlookedoutafterhim,butshedidnotcomeintotheopen.

           Thebeardedmansaid,«Howdy,folks,"andhisrestlessdarkeyesjumpedtoeachmemberofthefamily,andfromthemtothetrucktotheequipment.

           Pasaid,«Ijus’astyourwomanifit’sallrighttosetourstuffanywheres.»

           ThebeardedmanlookedatPaintently,asthoughhehadsaidsomethingverywisethatneededthought.«Setdownanywheres,hereinthisplace?»heasked.

           «Sure.Anybodyownthisplace,thatwegottosee’forewecancamp?»

           ThebeardedmansquintedoneeyenearlyclosedandstudiedPa.«Youwantacamphere?»

           Pa’sirritationarose.Thegraywomanpeeredoutoftheburlapshack.«WhatyouthinkI’ma-sayin’?»Pasaid.

           «Well,ifyouwantacamphere,whydon’tya?Iain’ta-stoppin’you.»

           Tomlaughed.«Hegotit.»
