Onsaturdaymorningthewashtubswerecrowded.Thewomenwasheddresses,pinkginghamsandfloweredcottons,andtheyhungtheminthesunandstretchedtheclothtosmoothit.Whenafternooncamethewholecampquickenedandthepeoplegrewexcited.Thechildrencaughtthefeverandweremorenoisythanusual.Aboutmid-afternoonchildbathingbegan,andaseachchildwascaught,subdued,andwashed,thenoiseontheplaygroundgraduallysubsided.Beforefive,thechildrenwerescrubbedandwarnedaboutgettingdirtyagain;andtheywalkedabout,stiffincleanclothes,miserablewithcarefulness.
