ThatnightAlstoleafencerailandmadearidgepoleonthetruck,bracedatbothends.Thatnighttheyatenothingbutpanbiscuits,coldandhard,heldoverfrombreakfast.Theyfloppeddownonthemattressesandsleptintheirclothes.TheWilsonsdidn’tevenputuptheirtent.

Twodaysthefamilieswereinflight,butonthethirdthelandwastoohugeforthemandtheysettledintoanewtechniqueofliving;thehighwaybecametheirhomeandmovementtheirmediumofexpression.
