OnceCaliforniabelongedtoMexicoanditslandtoMexicans;andahordeoftatteredfeverishAmericanspouredin.Andsuchwastheirhungerforlandthattheytooktheland—stoleSutter’sland,Guerrero’sland,tookthegrantsandbrokethemupandgrowledandquarreledoverthem,thosefrantichungrymen;andtheyguardedwithgunsthelandtheyhadstolen.Theyputuphousesandbarns,theyturnedtheearthandplantedcrops.Andthesethingswerepossession,andpossessionwasownership.
TheMexicanswereweakandfled.Theycouldnotresist,becausetheywantednothingintheworldasfranticallyastheAmericanswantedland.
