Whilethesunwasup,itwasabeating,flailingheat,butnowtheheatcamefrombelow,fromtheearthitself,andtheheatwasthickandmuffling.Thelightsofthetruckcameon,andtheyilluminatedalittleblurofhighwayahead,andastripofdesertoneithersideoftheroad.Andsometimeseyesgleamedinthelightsfarahead,butnoanimalshowedinthelights.Itwaspitchdarkunderthecanvasnow.UncleJohnandthepreacherwerecurledinthemiddleofthetruck,restingontheirelbows,andstaringoutthebacktriangle.TheycouldseethetwobumpsthatwereMaandGranmaagainsttheoutside.TheycouldseeMamoveoccasionally,andherdarkarmmovingagainsttheoutside.UncleJohntalkedtothepreacher."Casy,"hesaid,"you’reafellaoughtaknowwhattodo."
