           Inthefardistance,wavedupagainstthesky,themountainsstood.Andthewheelsofthecarscreakedaround,andtheengineswerehot,andthesteamspurtedaroundtheradiatorcaps.TheycrawledtothePecosriver,andcrossedatSantaRosa.Andtheywentonfortwentymiles.

           

           AlJoaddrovethetouringcar,andhismothersatbesidehim,andRoseofSharonbesideher.Aheadthetruckcrawled.Thehotairfoldedinwavesovertheland,andthemountainsshiveredintheheat.Aldrovelistlessly,hunchedbackintheseat,hishandhookedeasilyoverthecross-barofthesteeringwheel;hisgrayhat,peakedandpulledtoanincrediblycockyshape,waslowoveroneeye;andashedrove,heturnedandspatoutthesidenowandthen.
