           He’sgone,Harrytoldhimself.He’sgone.Hehadtokeepthinkingitashewashedanddressed,asthoughrepetitionwoulddulltheshockofit.He’sgoneandhe’snotcomingback.Andthatwasthesimpletruthofit,Harryknew,becausetheirprotectiveenchantmentsmeantthatitwouldbeimpossible,oncetheyvacatedthisspot,forRontofindthemagain.

           HeandHermioneatebreakfastinsilence.Hermione’seyeswerepuffyandred;shelookedasifshehadnotslept.Theypackeduptheirthings,Hermionedawdling.Harryknewwhyshewantedtospinouttheirtimeontheriverbank;severaltimeshesawherlookupeagerly,andhewassureshehaddeludedherselfintothinkingthatsheheardfootstepsthroughtheheavyrain,butnored-hairedfigureappearedbetweenthetrees.EverytimeHarryimitatedher,lookedaround(forhecouldnothelphopingalittle,himself)andsawnothingbutrain-sweptwoods,anotherlittleparceloffuryexplodedinsidehim.
