The Goblin’s Revenge

           Earlynextmorning,beforetheothertwowereawake,Harryleftthetenttosearchthewoodsaroundthemfortheoldest,mostgnarled,andresilient-lookingtreehecouldfind.ThereinitsshadowheburiedMad-EyeMoody’seyeandmarkedthespotbygougingasmallcrossinthebarkwithhiswand.Itwasnotmuch,butHarryfeltthatMad-EyewouldhavemuchpreferredthistobeingstuckonDoloresUmbridge’sdoor.Thenhereturnedtothetenttowaitfortheotherstowake,anddiscusswhattheyweregoingtodonext.

           HarryandHermionefeltthatitwasbestnottostayanywheretoolong,andRonagreed,withthesoleprovisothattheirnextmovetookthemwithinreachofabaconsandwich.Hermionethereforeremovedtheenchantmentsshehadplacedaroundtheclearing,whileHarryandRonobliteratedallthemarksandimpressionsonthegroundthatmightshowtheyhadcampedthere.ThentheyDisapparatedtotheoutskirtsofasmallmarkettown.

           Oncetheyhadpitchedthetentintheshelterofasmallcopseoftreesandsurroundeditwithfreshlycastdefensiveenchantments,HarryventuredoutundertheInvisibilityCloaktofindsustenance.This,however,didnotgoasplanned.Hehadbarelyenteredthetownwhenanunnaturalchill,adescendingmist,andasuddendarkeningoftheskiesmadehimfreezewherehestood.

           "ButyoucanmakeabrilliantPatronus!"protestedRon,whenHarryarrivedbackatthetentempty-handed,outofbreath,andmouthingthesingleword,dementors.

           "Icouldn’t...makeone,"hepanted,clutchingthestitchinhisside.
