A New Destination

           FORthefirstfewmomentsthejoyofreunioncompletelyfilledthehearts.LordGlenarvanhadtakencarethattheill-successoftheirexpeditionshouldnotthrowagloomoverthepleasureofmeeting,hisveryfirstwordsbeing:

           "Cheerup,friends,cheerup!CaptainGrantisnotwithus,butwehaveacertaintyoffindinghim!"

           OnlysuchanassuranceasthiswouldhaverestoredhopetothoseonboardtheDuncan.LadyHelenaandMaryGranthadbeensorelytriedbythesuspense,astheystoodonthepoopwaitingforthearrivaloftheboat,andtryingtocountthenumberofitspassengers.AlternatehopeandfearagitatedthebosomofpoorMary.Sometimesshefanciedshecouldseeherfather,HarryGrant,andsometimesshegavewaytodespair.Herheartthrobbedviolently;shecouldnotspeak,andindeedcouldscarcelystand.LadyHelenaputherarmroundherwaisttosupporther,butthecaptain,JohnMangles,whostoodclosebesidethemspokenoencouragingword,forhispracticedeyesawplainlythatthecaptainwasnotthere.

           "Heisthere!Heiscoming!Oh,father!"exclaimedtheyounggirl.Butastheboatcamenearer,herillusionwasdispelled;allhopeforsookher,andshewouldhavesunkindespair,butforthereassuringvoiceofGlenarvan.

           Aftertheirmutualembraceswereover,LadyHelena,andMaryGrant,andJohnMangles,wereinformedoftheprincipalincidentsoftheexpedition,andespeciallyofthenewinterpretationofthedocument,duetothesagacityofJacquesPaganel.
