           THEeasternsideoftheCordillerasoftheAndesconsistsofasuccessionoflengtheneddeclivities,whichslopedownalmostinsensiblytotheplain.Thesoiliscarpetedwithrichherbage,andadornedwithmagnificenttrees,amongwhich,ingreatnumbers,wereapple-trees,plantedatthetimeoftheconquest,andgoldenwithfruit.Therewereliterally,perfectforestsofthese.Thisdistrictwas,infact,justacorneroffertileNormandy.

           Thesuddentransitionfromadeserttoanoasis,fromsnowypeakstoverdantplains,fromWintertoSummer,cannotfailtostrikethetraveler’seye.

           Theground,moreover,hadrecovereditsimmobility.Thetremblinghadceased,thoughtherewaslittledoubttheforcesbelowthesurfacewerecarryingontheirdevastatingworkfurtheron,forshocksofearthquakearealwaysoccurringinsomepartorotheroftheAndes.Thistimetheshockhadbeenoneofextremeviolence.Theoutlineofthemountainswaswhollyaltered,andthePampasguideswouldhavesoughtvainlyfortheaccustomedlandmarks.

           Amagnificentdayhaddawned.Thesunwasjustrisingfromhisoceanbed,andhisbrightraysstreamedalreadyovertheArgentineplains,andranacrosstotheAtlantic.Itwasabouteighto’clock.

           LordGlenarvanandhiscompanionsweregraduallyrestoredtoanimationbytheMajor’sefforts.Theyhadbeencompletelystunned,buthadsustainednoinjurywhatever.
