           NotoneofthebraveScotswhosetoutatthesummonsoftheirchief,butcouldanswertotheirnames;allwerereturningtotheiroldScotia.

           AssoonastheDuncanhadre-provisioned,shesailedalongthecoastofPatagonia,doubledCapeHorn,andmadeaswiftrunuptheAtlanticOcean.Novoyagecouldbemoredevoidofincident.Theyachtwassimplycarryinghomeacargoofhappiness.Therewasnosecretnowonboard,notevenJohnMangles’sattachmenttoMaryGrant.

           Yes,therewasonemysterystill,whichgreatlyexcitedMcNabbs’scuriosity.WhywasitthatPaganelremainedalwayshermeticallyfastenedupinhisclothes,withabigcomforterroundhisthroatanduptohisveryears?TheMajorwasburningwithdesiretoknowthereasonofthissingularfashion.Butinspiteofinterrogations,allusions,andsuspicionsonthepartofMcNabbs,Paganelwouldnotunbutton.
