           SirPittCrawleyhaddonemorethanrepairfencesandrestoredilapidatedlodgesontheQueen’sCrawleyestate.Likeawisemanhehadsettoworktorebuildtheinjuredpopularityofhishouseandstopupthegapsandruinsinwhichhisnamehadbeenleftbyhisdisreputableandthriftlessoldpredecessor.Hewaselectedfortheboroughspeedilyafterhisfather’sdemise;amagistrate,amemberofparliament,acountymagnateandrepresentativeofanancientfamily,hemadeithisdutytoshowhimselfbeforetheHampshirepublic,subscribedhandsomelytothecountycharities,calledassiduouslyuponallthecountyfolk,andlaidhimselfoutinawordtotakethatpositioninHampshire,andintheEmpireafterwards,towhichhethoughthisprodigioustalentsjustlyentitledhim.LadyJanewasinstructedtobefriendlywiththeFuddlestones,andtheWapshots,andtheotherfamousbaronets,theirneighbours.TheircarriagesmightfrequentlybeseenintheQueen’sCrawleyavenuenow;theydinedprettyfrequentlyattheHall(wherethecookerywassogoodthatitwasclearLadyJaneveryseldomhadahandinit),andinreturnPittandhiswifemostenergeticallydinedoutinallsortsofweatherandatallsortsofdistances.ForthoughPittdidnotcareforjoviality,beingafrigidmanofpoorhearthandappetite,yetheconsideredthattobehospitableandcondescendingwasquiteincumbenton-hisstation,andeverytimethathegotaheadachefromtoolonganafter-dinnersitting,hefeltthathewasamartyrtoduty.
