           Enemiesthemostobstinateandcourageouscan’tholdoutagainststarvation;sotheelderOsbornefelthimselfprettyeasyabouthisadversaryintheencounterwehavejustdescribed;andassoonasGeorge’ssuppliesfellshort,confidentlyexpectedhisunconditionalsubmission.Itwasunlucky,tobesure,thattheladshouldhavesecuredastockofprovisionsontheverydaywhenthefirstencountertookplace;butthisreliefwasonlytemporary,oldOsbornethought,andwouldbutdelayGeorge’ssurrender.Nocommunicationpassedbetweenfatherandsonforsomedays.Theformerwassulkyatthissilence,butnotdisquieted;for,ashesaid,heknewwherehecouldputthescrewuponGeorge,andonlywaitedtheresultofthatoperation.Hetoldthesisterstheupshotofthedisputebetweenthem,butorderedthemtotakenonoticeofthematter,andwelcomeGeorgeonhisreturnasifnothinghadhappened.Hiscoverwaslaidasusualeveryday,andperhapstheoldgentlemanratheranxiouslyexpectedhim;buthenevercame.SomeoneinquiredattheSlaughters’regardinghim,whereitwassaidthatheandhisfriendCaptainDobbinhadlefttown.

           Onegusty,rawdayattheendofApriltherainwhippingthepavementofthatancientstreetwheretheoldSlaughters’Coffee-housewasoncesituatedGeorgeOsbornecameintothecoffee-room,lookingveryhaggardandpale;althoughdressedrathersmartlyinabluecoatandbrassbuttons,andaneatbuffwaistcoatofthefashionofthosedays.
