           OurMajorhadrenderedhimselfsopopularonboardtheRamchunderthatwhenheandMr.Sedleydescendedintothewelcomeshore-boatwhichwastotakethemfromtheship,thewholecrew,menandofficers,thegreatCaptainBragghimselfleadingoff,gavethreecheersforMajorDobbin,whoblushedverymuchandduckedhisheadintokenofthanks.Jos,whoverylikelythoughtthecheerswereforhimself,tookoffhisgold-lacedcapandwaveditmajesticallytohisfriends,andtheywerepulledtoshoreandlandedwithgreatdignityatthepier,whencetheyproceededtotheRoyalGeorgeHotel.

           Althoughthesightofthatmagnificentroundofbeef,andthesilvertankardsuggestiveofrealBritishhome-brewedaleandporter,whichperenniallygreettheeyesofthetravellerreturningfromforeignpartswhoentersthecoffee-roomoftheGeorge,aresoinvigoratinganddelightfulthatamanenteringsuchacomfortablesnughomelyEnglishinnmightwellliketostopsomedaysthere,yetDobbinbegantotalkaboutapost-chaiseinstantly,andwasnosooneratSouthamptonthanhewishedtobeontheroadtoLondon.Jos,however,wouldnothearofmovingthatevening.Whywashetopassanightinapost-chaiseinsteadofagreatlargeundulatingdownyfeather-bedwhichwastherereadytoreplacethehorridlittlenarrowcribinwhichtheportlyBengalgentlemanhadbeenconfinedduringthevoyage?Hecouldnotthinkofmovingtillhisbaggagewascleared,oroftravellinguntilhecoulddosowithhischillum.
