           Astheywentalongthequayside,severalsailorscalledoutanxiouslyfromthemooredships,wantingtoknowitthenoisemeantstormsorbadluck.

           Therewerehorrendous,dramatic,violentquantitiesofgreenslime—oodlesofit.ItcoveredHowlcompletely.Itdrapedhisheadandshouldersinstickydollops,heapingonhiskneesandhands,tricklinginglopsdownhislegs,anddrippingoffthestoolinstickystrands.Itwasinoozingpondsandcrawlingpoolsovermostofthefloor.Longfingersofithadcreptintotheheart.Itsmelledvile.

           “Saveme!”Calcifercriedinahoarsewhisper.Hewasdowntotwodesperatelyflickeringsmallflames.“Thisstuffisgoingtoputmeout!”

           SophieheldupherskirtandmarchedasnearHowlasshecouldget—whichwasnotverynear.“Stopit!”shesaid.“Stopitatonce!Youarebehavingjustlikeababy!”

           Howldidnotmoveoranswer.Hisfacestaredfrombehindtheslime,whiteandtragicandwide-eyed.

           “Whatshallwedo?Ishedead?”Michaelasked,jitteringbesidethedoor.

           Michaelwasaniceboy,Sophiethought,butabithelplessinacrisis.“No,ofcourseheisn’t,”shesaid.
