Severalhourspassed.Thedog-manwashungryagain.MichaelandSophiedecidedtohavelunchtoo.SophieapproachedCalciferwiththefryingpan.
“Whycan’tyouhavebreadandcheeseforonce?”Calcifergrumbled.
Allthesame,hebenthishead.SophiewasjustputtingthepanontopofthecurlygreenflameswhenHowl’svoicerangouthoarselyfromnowhere.
“Braceyourself,Calcifer!She’sfoundme!”
Calcifersprangupright.ThefryingpanfellacrossSophie’sknees.“You’llhavetowait!”Calciferroared,flamingblindinglyupthechimney.Almostatonceheblurredintoadozenorsoburningbluefaces,asifhewasbeingshakenviolentlyabout,andburnedwithaloud,throatywhirring.

Somethingsweptoverheadwithablastandaboomwhichshookeverythingintheroom.Asecondsomethingfollowed,withalong,shrillroar.Calciferpulsednearlyblue-black,andSophie’sskinfizzedwiththebackblastfromthemagic.
Michaelscrambledforthewindow.“They’requitenear!”
Sophiehobbledtothewindowto.Thestormofmagicseemedtohaveaffectedhalfthethingsintheroom.Theskullwasyatteringitsjawsohardthatitwastravelingroundincircles.
