“DearSophie,”hesaid.“Alwaysbusy.Youwerehardatworkyesterday,weren’tyou,inspiteofmyadvice?Whyhaveyoumadeajigsawpuzzleofmybestsuit?Justafriendlyinquiry,youknow.”
“Youjelliedittheotherday,”saidSophie.“I’mmakingitover.”
“Icandothat,”saidHowl.“IthoughtIshowedyou.Icanalsomakeyouapairofseven-leaguebootsofyourownifyougivemeyoursize.Somethingpracticalinbrowncalf,perhaps.It’samazingthewayonecantakeasteptenandhalfmileslongandstillalwayslandinacowpat.”
“Itmayhavebeenabullpat,”saidSophie.“Idaresayyoufoundmudfromthemarshesonthemtoo.Apersonmyageneedsalotofexercise.”
“YouwereevenbusierthanIrealized,then,”saidHowl.“BecausewhenIhappenedtotearmyeyesfromLettie’slovelyfaceforaninstantyesterday,IcouldhaveswornIsawyourlongnosepokingroundthecornerofthehouse.”
