           SheknewthiswasridiculousevenbeforePercivalsaid,“No,theWitchcalledmeGaston,butthatisn’tmyname.”

           “Don’tcrowdhim,Michael,”saidHowl.“Anddon’tmakeSophiesnortagain.Inthemoodshe’sin,she’llbringdownthecastlenexttime.”

           ThoughthatseemedtomeanHowlwasnolongerangry,Sophiefoundshewasangrierthanever.Shestumpedoffintotheshop,whereshebangedabout,shuttingtheshopandputtingthingsawayforthenight.Shewenttolookatherdaffodils.Somethinghadgonehorriblywrongwiththem.Theywerewetbrownthingstrailingoutofabucketfullofthepoisonous-smellingliquidshehadevercomeacross.

           “Oh,confounditall!”Sophieyelled.

           “What’sallthis,now?”saidHowl,arrivingintheshop.Hebentoverthebucketandsniffed.“Youseemtohavesomeratherefficientweed-killerhere.Howabouttryingitonthoseweedsonthedriveofthemansion?”

           “Iwill,”saidSophie.“Ifeellikekillingsomething!”Sheslammedarounduntilshehadfoundawateringcan,andstumpedthroughintothecastlewiththecanandthebucket,whereshehurledopenthedoor,orange-down,ontothemansiondrive.Percivallookedupanxiously.Theyhadgivenhimtheguitar,ratherasyougaveababyarattle,andhewassittingmakinghorribletwangings.

           “Yougowithher,Percival,”Howlsaid.“Themoodshe’sinshe’llbekillingallthetreestoo.”

           SoPercivallaiddowntheguitarandtookthebucketcarefullyoutofSophie’shand.Sophiestumpedoutintoagoldensummereveningattheendofthevalley.
