Thedog-manwastakencompletelybysurpriseandhisinstinctsgotthebetterofhim.Hishacklescameup,hisearslowered,andhegrowled.Howlplayedup—orelsehefeltthesame.Thetwoidenticaldogswalkedroundoneanother,glaring,growling,bristling,andgettingreadytofight.
Sophiecaughtthetailoftheoneshethoughtwasthedog-man.MichaelgrabbedfortheonehethoughtwasHowl.Howlratherhastilyturnedhimselfback.SophiefoundatallblackpersonstandinginfrontofherandletgoofthebackofHowl’sjacket.Thedog-mansatdownonMichael’sfeet,staringtragically.
“Good,”saidHowl.“IfIcandeceiveanotherdog,Icanfooleveryoneelse.Nooneatthefuneralisgoingtonoticeastraydogliftingitslegagainstthegravestones.”Hewenttothedoorandturnedtheknobblue-down.
“Waitamoment,”saidSophie.“Ifyou’regoingtothefuneralasaredsetter,whytakeallthetroubleofgettingyourselfupinblack?”
