Anyway,JamesmadeitallthewaytotheAmazon,wheretherealadventurewastobegin.Surprisingly,hisfragilehealthheldupthatwholeway.Butoncehefinallymadeit,onthefirstdayoftheexpedition,hepromptlycontractedsmallpoxandnearlydiedinthejungle.
Thenhisbackspasmsreturned,painfultothepointofmakingJamesunabletowalk.Bythistime,hewasemaciatedandstarvedfromthesmallpox,immobilizedbyhisbadback,andleftaloneinthemiddleofSouthAmerica(therestoftheexpeditionhavinggoneonwithouthim)withnoclearwaytogethome—ajourneythatwouldtakemonthsandlikelykillhimanyway.
ButsomehowheeventuallymadeitbacktoNewEngland,wherehewasgreetedbyan(evenmore)disappointedfather.
