IfIaskyou,“Whatdoyouwantoutoflife?”andyousaysomethinglike,“IwanttobehappyandhaveagreatfamilyandajobIlike,”yourresponseissocommonandexpectedthatitdoesn’treallymeananything.
Everybodyenjoyswhatfeelsgood.Everyonewantstoliveacarefree,happy,andeasylife,tofallinloveandhaveamazingsexandrelationships,tolookperfectandmakemoneyandbepopularandwell-respectedandadmiredandatotalballertothepointthatpeoplepartliketheRedSeawhentheywalkintotheroom.
Everybodywantsthat.It’seasytowantthat.
Amoreinterestingquestion,aquestionthatmostpeopleneverconsider,is,“Whatpaindoyouwantinyourlife?Whatareyouwillingtostrugglefor?”Becausethatseemstobeagreaterdeterminantofhowourlivesturnout.
Forexample,mostpeoplewanttogetthecornerofficeandmakeaboatloadofmoney—butnotmanypeoplewanttosufferthroughsixty-hourworkweeks,longcommutes,obnoxiouspaperwork,andarbitrarycorporatehierarchiestoescapetheconfinesofaninfinitecubiclehell.
Mostpeoplewanttohavegreatsexandanawesomerelationship,butnoteveryoneiswillingtogothroughthetoughconversations,theawkwardsilences,thehurtfeelings,andtheemotionalpsychodramatogetthere.Andsotheysettle.
