Becausehere’ssomethingthat’sweirdbuttrue:wedon’tactuallyknowwhatapositiveornegativeexperienceis.Someofthemostdifficultandstressfulmomentsofourlivesalsoendupbeingthemostformativeandmotivating.Someofthebestandmostgratifyingexperiencesofourlivesarealsothemostdistractinganddemotivating.Don’ttrustyourconceptionofpositive/negativeexperiences.Allthatweknowforcertainiswhathurtsinthemomentandwhatdoesn’t.Andthat’snotworthmuch.
Justaswelookbackinhorroratthelivesofpeoplefivehundredyearsago,Iimaginepeoplefivehundredyearsfromnowwilllaughatusandourcertaintiestoday.Theywilllaughathowweletourmoneyandourjobsdefineourlives.Theywilllaughathowwewereafraidtoshowappreciationforthosewhomattertousmost,yetheapedpraiseonpublicfigureswhodidn’tdeserveanything.Theywilllaughatourritualsandsuperstitions,ourworriesandourwars;theywillgawkatourcruelty.Theywillstudyourartandargueoverourhistory.Theywillunderstandtruthsaboutusofwhichnoneofusareyetaware.
