           Allhadsufferedcrushingmisfortunesandhadnotbeencrushed.Theyhadnotbeenbrokenbythecrashofempires,themachetesofrevoltingslaves,war,rebellion,proscription,confiscation.Malignfatehadbrokentheirnecks,perhaps,butnevertheirhearts.Theyhadnotwhined,theyhadfought.Andwhentheydied,theydiedspentbutunquenched.Allofthoseshadowyfolkswhosebloodflowedinherveinsseemedtomovequietlyinthemoonlitroom.AndScarlettwasnotsurprisedtoseethem,thesekinsmenwhohadtakentheworstthatfatecouldsendandhammereditintothebest.Tarawasherfate,herfight,andshemustconquerit.
