           SpringplowingwasatitsheightandthecottonandgardenseedPorkhadbroughtfromMaconwasbeingputintotheground.Porkhadbeenalmostworthlesssincethetrip,soproudwasheofreturningsafelywithhiswagon-loadofdressgoods,seed,fowls,hams,sidemeatandmeal.Overandover,hetoldthestoryofhismanynarrowescapes,ofthebypathsandcountrylaneshehadtakenonhisreturntoTara,theunfrequentedroads,theoldtrails,thebridlepaths.Hehadbeenfiveweeksontheroad,agonizingweeksforScarlett.Butshedidnotupbraidhimonhisreturn,forshewashappythathehadmadethetripsuccessfullyandpleasedthathebroughtbacksomuchofthemoneyshehadgivenhim.Shehadashrewdsuspicionthatthereasonhehadsomuchmoneyleftoverwasthathehadnotboughtthefowlsormostofthefood.Porkwouldhavetakenshametohimselfhadhespenthermoneywhentherewereunguardedhencoopsalongtheroadandsmokehouseshandy.

           Nowthattheyhadalittlefood,everyoneatTarawasbusytryingtorestoresomesemblanceofnaturalnesstolife.Therewasworkforeverypairofhands,toomuchwork,never-endingwork.
