Mayof1864came—ahotdryMaythatwiltedtheflowersinthebuds—andtheYankeesunderGeneralShermanwereinGeorgiaagain,aboveDalton,onehundredmilesnorthwestofAtlanta.RumorhaditthattherewouldbeheavyfightingupthereneartheboundarybetweenGeorgiaandTennessee.TheYankeesweremassingforanattackontheWesternandAtlanticRailroad,thelinewhichconnectedAtlantawithTennesseeandtheWest,thesamelineoverwhichtheSoutherntroopshadbeenrushedlastfalltowinthevictoryatChickamauga.
But,forthemostpart,AtlantawasnotdisturbedbytheprospectoffightingnearDalton.TheplacewheretheYankeeswereconcentratingwasonlyafewmilessoutheastofthebattlefieldofChickamauga.Theyhadbeendrivenbackoncewhentheyhadtriedtobreakthroughthemountainpassesofthatregion,andtheywouldbedrivenbackagain.
Atlanta—andallofGeorgia—knewthatthestatewasfartooimportanttotheConfederacyforGeneralJoeJohnstontolettheYankeesremaininsidethestate’sbordersforlong.OldJoeandhisarmywouldnotletevenoneYankeegetsouthofDalton,fortoomuchdependedontheundisturbedfunctioningofGeorgia.Theunravagedstatewasavastgranary,machineshopandstorehousefortheConfederacy.Itmanufacturedmuchofthepowderandarmsusedbythearmyandmostofthecottonandwoolengoods.LyingbetweenAtlantaandDaltonwasthecityofRomewithitscannonfoundryanditsotherindustries,andEtowahandAllatoonawiththelargestironworkssouthofRichmond.
