Now,atfirst,KikiArudidn’trealizewhatawonderfulsecrethehaddiscovered;buthethoughtitmightbeofusetohimandsohetookapieceofpaperandmadeonitanexactcopyoftheinstructionsforpronouncingPyrzqxgl.Thenhefoldedthepaperandputitinhispocket,andreplacedtheboardinthefloorsothatnoonewouldsuspectithadbeenremoved.
AfterthisKikiwentintothegardenandsittingbeneathatreemadeacarefulstudyofthepaper.HehadalwayswantedtogetawayfromMountMunchandvisitthebigworld—especiallytheLandofOz—andtheideanowcametohimthatifhecouldtransformhimselfintoabird,hecouldflytoanyplacehewishedtogoandflybackagainwheneverhecaredto.Itwasnecessary,however,tolearnbyheartthewaytopronouncethemagicword,becauseabirdwouldhavenowaytocarryapaperwithit,andKikiwouldbeunabletoresumehispropershapeifheforgotthewordoritspronunciation.
Sohestudieditalongtime,repeatingitahundredtimesinhisminduntilhewassurehewouldnotforgetit.Buttomakesafetydoublysureheplacedthepaperinatinboxinaneglectedpartofthegardenandcoveredtheboxwithsmallstones.
BythistimeitwasgettinglateinthedayandKikiwishedtoattempthisfirsttransformationbeforehisparentsreturnedfromthefestival
