20. The Monkeys Have Trouble
Instantlythemonkeysleapedthroughthebars,oneafteranother,andalthoughtheyweresosmalltheentiredozenofthemsurroundedtheGlassCatandclungtoherclawsandtailandearsandmadeheraprisoner.Thentheyforcedheroutofthetentanddowntothebanksofthestream.Themonkeyshadnoticedthatthesebankswerecoveredwiththick,slimymudofadarkbluecolor,andwhentheyhadtakentheCattothestream,theysmearedthismudallovertheglassbodyofthecat,fillingthecreature’searsandeyeswithit,sothatshecouldneitherseenorhear.Shewasnolongertransparentandsothickwasthemuduponherthatnoonecouldseeherpinkbrainsorherrubyheart.
Inthisconditiontheyledthepussybacktothetentandthengotinsidetheircageagain.
BymorningthemudhaddriedhardontheGlassCatanditwasadullbluecolorthroughout.DorothyandTrotwerehorrified,buttheWizardshookhisheadandsaiditservedtheGlassCatrightforteasingthemonkeys.
Cap’nBill,withhisstronghands,soonbentthegoldenwiresofthemonkeys’cageintotheproperpositionandthenheaskedtheWizardifheshouldwashtheGlassCatinthewaterofthebrook.
"Notjustyet,"answeredtheWizard."TheCatdeservestobepunished,soIthinkI’llleavethatbluemud—whichisasbadaspaint—uponherbodyuntilshegetstotheEmeraldCity.ThesillycreatureissovainthatshewillbegreatlyshamedwhentheOzpeopleseeherinthiscondition,andperhapsshe’lltakethelessontoheartandleavethemonkeysalonehereafter.
