           TrotandDorothycouldbothrideonthebackoftheHungryTiger,andbetweenthemtheycarriedthecageofmonkeys.ButthisarrangementlefttheWizard,aswellasthesailor,tomakethejourneyonfoot,andsotheprocessionmovedslowlyandtheGlassCatgrumbledbecauseitwouldtakesolongtogettotheEmeraldCity.

           TheCatwassour-temperedandgrumpy,atfirst,butbeforetheyhadjourneyedfar,thecrystalcreaturehaddiscoveredafineamusement.Thelongtailsofthemonkeyswereconstantlystickingthroughthebarsoftheircage,andwhentheydid,theGlassCatwouldslylyseizethetailsinherpawsandpullthem.Thatmadethemonkeysscream,andtheirscreamspleasedtheGlassCatimmensely.TrotandDorothytriedtostopthisnaughtyamusement,butwhentheywerenotlookingtheCatwouldpullthetailsagain,andthecreaturewassoslyandquickthatthemonkeyscouldseldomescape.TheyscoldedtheCatangrilyandshookthebarsoftheircage,buttheycouldnotgetoutandtheCatonlylaughedatthem.

           AfterthepartyhadlefttheforestandwereontheplainsoftheMunchkinCountry,itgrewdark,andtheywereobligedtomakecampforthenight,choosingaprettyplacebesideabrook.
