           SotheWizardgavethecommandandpronouncedtheMagicWord,andintheinstantTrotandCap’nBillstoodbesidethemasnaturalasbeforetheyhadmettheirfearfuladventure.Fortheywerenolongersmallinsize,becausetheWizardhadtransformedthemfrombumblebeesintotheshapesandsizesthatnaturehadformerlygiventhem.Theuglyrootsontheirfeethaddisappearedwiththetransformation.

           WhileDorothywashuggingTrot,andTrotwassoftlycryingbecauseshewassohappy,theWizardshookhandswithCap’nBillandcongratulatedhimonhisescape.Theoldsailor-manwassopleasedthathealsoshooktheLion’spawandtookoffhishatandbowedpolitelytothecageofmonkeys.

           ThenCap’nBilldidacuriousthing.Hewenttoabigtreeand,takingouthisknife,cutawayabig,broadpieceofthickbark.Thenhesatdownonthegroundandaftertakingarollofstoutcordfromhispocket—whichseemedtobefullofallsortsofthings—heproceededtobindtheflatpieceofbarktothebottomofhisgoodfoot,overtheleathersole.

           "What’sthatfor?"inquiredtheWizard.

           "Ihatetobestumped,"repliedthesailor-man;"soI’mgoin’backtothatisland."

           "Andgetenchantedagain?"exclaimedTrot,withevidentdisapproval.

           "No;thistimeI’lldodgethemagicoftheisland.Inoticedthatmywoodenlegdidn’tgetstuck,ortakeroot,an’neitherdidtheglassfeetoftheGlassCat.It’sonlyathingthat’smadeofmeat—likemanan’beasts—thatthemagiccanholdan’roottotheground.Ourshoesareleather,an’leathercomesfromabeast’shide.
